Non-Fermi-liquid behavior in d- and f-electron metals - The Landau Fermi-liquid theory is the usual framework for the discussion of low-lying excitations in metals, which behave as a collection of weakly interacting electronlike particles. This approach describes the equilibrium and transport properties of most metals. A class of relatively complex materials has emerged, involving more than 50 systems, which is not described by Landau Fermi-liquid theory. This review discusses various theoretical approaches to the description of the phenomena that are observed, and organizes the disparate data, identifying important correlations and trends as well as areas where further theoretical and experimental research is needed.Stewart, G.R. et al. | 2001

Colloquium: Condensed phases of gases inside nanotube bundles - Absorption of gases in and on nanotube bundles offers an opportunity to study a rich set of low-dimensional condensed phases. Theory predicts a number of crossover transitions from one-dimensional to higher-dimensional behavior, including striped phases. Nanotube bundles also hold the promise of practical application as a means for gas storage.Calbi, M.Mercedes et al. | 2001

Vortex states and quantum magnetic oscillations in conventional type-II superconductors - The interplay of quantum magnetic effects and superconductivity has fascinated physicists for decades. The experimental discovery of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in superconductors has stimulated new efforts to understand the vortex state of type-II superconductors in intense magnetic fields. Recent theoretical developments are the subject of this review.Maniv, Tsofar et al. | 2001

Particles and fields in fluid turbulence - The search for scaling laws has been an important part of the theoretical effort to describe turbulence. This article presents the theory of some new scaling relations that have been recently obtained for correlation functions. The new relations are "anomalous" in that they break the invariance of the dynamic equations from which they are derived.Falkovich, G. et al. | 2001

Noncommutative field theory - Quantum field theories, like those of the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions, realize the usual principles of quantum mechanics in a manner consistent with Lorentz invariance and locality. In recent years, first mathematicians and then physicists have studied a class of field theories with fascinating properties, which are not local in the usual sense. Among their other features, they exhibit an uncertainty relation between different spatial coordinates, as well as between coordinates and momenta. These theories currently find application in condensed-matter systems as well as in certain regimes of superstring theory.Douglas, Michael R. et al. | 2001

The interstellar environment of our galaxy - The interstellar medium has an ambient pressure of only 10-20 atmospheres, but its composition is quite rich, ranging from molecules and dust grains to cosmics rays, all in a magnetic field of a few hundred microT. The cycling of matter form stars to interstellar medium and back varies depending on the medium's characteristics. This article discusses the components of the medium, their interactions, and their relationships to the stars.Ferrière, Katia M. et al. | 2001

Traffic and related self-driven many-particle systems - The dynamics of traffic flow, a problem with an important human dimension, may be treated to a considerable extent by techniques of many-particle physics. This review describes the observed pheneomena in traffic flow and the physical models to explain them. Freeway traffic is by now a well-understood quasi-one-dimensional problem, while pedestrian traffic requires a two-dimensional treatment.Helbing, Dirk et al. | 2001
