Chemical and Photochemical Grafting of Sterically Hindered Amines onto Elastomers - EN-EPDM and Polyactenamer (TOR) react with singulet oxygen leading to the formation of polymeric pendant isolated and associated secondary hydroperoxides. Anthracene was used as a sensitizer for the generation of of singulett oxygen under 365 nm irridiation. Hydroperoxidation of EPDM in solution and in the solid state (film) was similar and only pendant hydroperoxides were produced. Irridiation (1> 300 nm) of hydroperoxidized EPDM and TOR in the presence of acrylate monomers containing the structural unit of the sterically hindered amine stabilizer HAS (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl- and 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidyl-acrylate) grafted these monomers onto the EPDM and TOR Brominated PE prepared by hydrobromination has been used as an intermediate for the synthesis of a new polymeric hindered amine stabilizer. Nucleophilic substitution of bromine atoms was obtained by 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine and resulted in a partial grafting of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine groups on the polymer chain. This new additive showed good stabilizing properties against photo- and thermo-oxidation of elastomers such as EPDM and polyoctenamer (Deutsch)

High Viscosity EVM Elastomers - General Purpose Materials for Molded and Extruded Articles - EVM Elastomers (Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers) have traditionally been used in the wire and cable industry applications such as heat resistant insulation and conductive 'easy-peel' layers. However their outstanding weathering and ozone resistance, excellent heat resistance, good oil resistance and low compression set at high temperatures should allow them to be used in other applications such as molded and extruded goods. In addition, EVM based compounds offer processing advantages, including no need for post-cure operations. Unfortunately, their low viscosity tends to give problems during processing and curing operations.
