CASE REPORT - Osteomyoplasty for Transtibial Amputation: A Case Report and Review of the Literature - Osteomyoplasty is a little-known surgical method used to achieve end-bearing stumps in transtibial amputees. The authors successfully used this technique in a patient with a 16-year-history of congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia, despite initial poor quality bone.Al Hussainy, Haydar et al. | 2004

SELECTED TOPIC - Preliminary Evidence for Effectiveness of a Stance Control Orthosis - The purpose of this study was to determine whether individuals with lower limb weakness walk more efficiently when using the Stance Control Orthotic Knee Joint (SCOKJ(R)) than when using a conventional knee-ankle-foot orthosis (KAFO) with the knee locked in extension. In summary, the subjects used a more symmetric, more aesthetic walking pattern, maneuvered over and around obstacles more easily, and seemed to walk more efficiently when wearing the SCOKJ(R) than when wearing a KAFO with the knee locked in extension.McMillan, Amy Gross et al. | 2004

SELECTED TOPIC - Coronal Plane Trunk Shifts and Decompensational Perspectives in a New Design of an Asymmetrical TLSO Module - This article explains the importance of overall spine balance in the conservative management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and emphasizes the need to pay particular attention to coronal plane deviations, such as decompensation and trunk shift. The author discusses the use of a new design of molded thoracolumbosacral orthoses with specific reference to decompensation and trunk shift.Smith, Keith M. et al. | 2004

PROSTHETIC & ORTHOTIC SCIENCE - Effects of Three Types of Ankle-Foot Orthoses on the Gait and Bicycling of a Patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease - The authors measured the effects of three ankle-foot orthoses on joint angles during walking and bicycling, ankle torque and power production during walking, and heart rate during bicycling for a single patient. The quantitative effects of each ankle-foot orthosis on walking and bicycling mechanics are discussed relative to the preferences of the patient, an avid bicyclist.Burdett, Ray G. et al. | 2004
