The Effective Foot Length Ratio: A Potential Tool for Characterization and Evaluation of Prosthetic Feet - The authors discuss the effective foot length ratio (EFLR) as a possible measurement tool for evaluation of prosthetic feet. The authors conclude that although the EFLR may be helpful for evaluation and design of prosthetic feet, it does not give a complete picture of a prosthetic foot's performance.Hansen, Andrew H. et al. | 2004

Eliminating Distortion by Internal Surface Cooling of Thermoplastics Vacuum Pulled on Polyurethane Molds to Manufacture Ankle-Foot Orthoses - The purpose of this study is to determine a process that will allow for copolymer ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) to be cooled in a relatively short period while eliminating the distortion associated with force-cooling thermoplastics. This is accomplished by force-cooling the internal surface of the AFO using tap water. The results of this study show copolymer AFOs manufactured using a polyurethane mold could be cooled in 10 to 15 minutes with time starting the instant the thermoplastic is removed from the oven. By dramatically decreasing the amount of time it takes to cool the AFO and strengthening the internal surface, manufacturers are able to offer patients a turnaround time of less than 3 hours.Foster, Lee et al. | 2004

Realtime Visual Feedback Diminishes Energy Consumption of Amputee Subjects During Treadmill Locomotion - Although the design and use of prostheses have improved during the past 10 years, problems with energy expenditure still affect the gait of amputee patients. Realtime visual feedback (RTVF) has been shown to have an immediate effect on gait symmetry, although the effect on energy consumption was not measured. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that as amputees walk more symmetrically with the aid of RTVF, there will be a reduction in their oxygen consumption. The conclusion from these data is that RTVF not only results in an immediate improvement in symmetry, but there are also concomitant reductions in heart rate and oxygen consumption while walking at a steady pace on a treadmill. This implies that RTVF may serve as a useful aid in the successful rehabilitation of amputee patients.Davis, Brian L. et al. | 2004

SELECTED TOPICS - The Effects of Plastazote and Aliplast-Plastazote Orthoses on Plantar Pressures in Elderly Persons With Diabetic Neuropathy - The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Plastazote@ and Aliplast(R)-Plastazote(R) orthoses in decreasing plantar pressures. Walking with shoes and either orthosis significantly decreased all plantar pressure variables and increased contact areas compared with walking with shoes without orthoses. Failure to find significant differences between orthoses made of Plastazote alone and orthoses made with the combination of Plastazote and Aliplast suggests that neither orthosis is more beneficial than the other in decreasing plantar pressures.Mohamed, Olfat et al. | 2004

SELECTED TOPICS - A Comparison of the Effect of the Aesthetics of Digital Cosmetic Prostheses on Body Image and Well-Being - The aims of this study were to investigate patient satisfaction with silicon and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) digital prostheses, and to examine the relationship between subjective body image and emotional status. The results suggest that enhanced cosmesis implies greater psychological well-being independently of body image and raises the importance of clinical significance over statistical significance.Carroll, Áine M. et al. | 2004
