Topical themes - The European steel industry on its way to world-class - A study conducted by A.T Kearney reveals that European steel companies have realized that the optimization of net working capital is an important option to boost their profitability. As opposed to a weaker position five years ago, they have now reached the worldwide median. However, the study underscores that European steel producers still have a long way to go to reach world-class.Keplinger, W. et al. | 2004

Topical themes - Innovative heat treatment solutions for steel strip - In Februrary 2003, the LOI-Group, Essen, Germany, acquired Drever International, Liège, Belgium. The LOI-Group now supplies the full range of furnaces for the heat treatment of steel strips. Drever has a leading position in continuous furnace lines. LOI is a top supplier of hydrogen batch annealing furnaces. The article provides an overview of interesting technical features and a comparison of the two types of heat treating plants.Raick, J.M. et al. | 2004

Steelmaking - Operational experience with new generation of converter suspension systems - Due to the steadily increasing number of converter upgrading projects, VAI developed an improved suspension system -- Referred to as the VAI-CON(R) Link suspension system. After the first implementation in 1997 orders for a total of 25 references have followed. The latest reference was from US Steel Kosice, which recently decided to have this system installed on the 180 t LD converter. The system is maintenance-free and, due to its robust design, direct contact with liquid steel poses no serious danger to the main system components.Staudinger, G. et al. | 2004

Plant profile - Baosteel Shanghai No. 5 new minimill goes on stream - Baosteel Group, one of the largest steel producers in the PR of China, selected Danieli for the supply of a new specialty steel minimill to Shanghai No.5 Steel Co. Ltd. The new plant features all the latest technologies and "high-tech" equipment available in steelmaking, casting, rolling, on-line processing and heat-treatment of stainless steel bars, wire rod and bar-in-coils.Tosini, R. et al. | 2004

Cold rolling - ThyssenKrupp Nirosta starts up new cold strip line - In June 2003 ThyssenKrupp Nirosta inaugurated a new cold strip line in Krefeld, Germany. The extremely compact cold strip line, which can be operated by five operators per shift, combines annealing, pickling, skin-pass rolling and edge trimming equipment.Kirchhoff, K.-H. et al. | 2004

Automation - Powerful and smooth starting of blast furnaces - In order to keep a blast furnace operational, blowers must move huge quantities of air. State-of-the-art drives ensure maximum plant availability. Not only is the system extremely reliable, but also the starting times are significantly shorter than for conventional drive concepts.Meyer, A. et al. | 2004

Pollution control - Zero-waste steel production - Environmental issues rank alongside economical aspects as a key challenge faced by today's iron and steelmaking facilities. Highly efficient cleaning systems filter larger amounts of flue dust compared to earlier off-gas cleaning systems. Dumping of steel mill waste is often restricted or not permitted in many locations. This drives several steel producers to reconsider their waste handling and treatment philosophy. Technologies based on the rotary hearth furnace fulfil the requirements of zero-waste steelmaking. They basically allow the treatment of all waste accumulating in steel mills, avoiding negative side effects on the steel quality and plant productivity and minimizing overall steel plant emissions.Fontana, P. et al. | 2004
