Process metallurgy - Influence of Direct Reduction Condition of Hematite Pellets with H2-CO on the Oxidation Behaviour of DRI in Air - Direct reduced iron (DRI) tends to oxidize in air generally above 300 (degree)C and then follows spontaneous combustion. To control the oxidation mechanism, several investigators have used different iron samples and methods. This paper gives the results of experimental work carried out for determination of DRI oxidation. The behaviour of DRI oxidation in air after isothermal reduction of hematite pellets with different size, temperature and H2 - CO mixture is investigated.Towhidi, Nasser et al. | 2003

Process metallurgy - Modelling of Gas-Powder Flow in a Blast Furnace - This paper presents a study of the gas-powder flow in a slot type packed bed in order to investigate the distribution of powder flow and accumulation in an ironmaking blast furnace. The effects of operational parameters such as gas flow rate and cohesive zone shape are examined. A mathematical model is developed to describe the gas-powder flow and powder accumulation. Its validity is verified by comparing the predicted and measured distributions of powder accumulation under various flow conditions.Dong, Xuefeng et al. | 2003

Process metallurgy - Model of Desulphurization of Steel Melts in Ladies -- Deoxidation and Slag Formers Calculation - The authors present their own model applicable for effective desulphurization of steel by ladle treatment. The model is based on a thermodynamic approach (equilibrium data) and technological data (correction factors). It consists of two parts. In the first part the authors present the formulae derived for estimation of the additions of deoxidation agents which ensure sufficiently low oxygen level prior to the desulphurization process, while the other part gives a qualitative and quantitative selection of slag formers to achieve low final levels of sulphur in steel.Karbowniczek, Miroslaw et al. | 2003

Metal forming - Strain-Rate Sensitivity in Hot Forming of Steels -- Influence of Microstructure, Temperature and Chemical Composition - A methodology to determine the strain-rate sensitivity index was developed. It was shown that initial grain size had nearly negligible influence on the investigated variable, whereas phase composition had a considerable effect. Combined influence of strain rate and temperature on deformation resistance of various types of steel was studied. For a selected group of steels a universal equation was set up which describes the impact of reciprocal temperature and chemical composition on strain-rate sensitivity in hot state.Schindler, Ivo et al. | 2003

Metal forming - Roll Wear Evaluation of HSS, HiCr and IC Work Rolls in Hot Strip Mill - While roll wear is one of the most challenges to hot strip mills, very few studies which detail an exact prediction model have been published. The aim of this work is to evaluate and compare two prediction models with measured roll wear. Data of two hot strip mills were used to investigate the influence of different rolling schedules. The rolls and strip properties were described and the rolling conditions were detailed. The influence of hot rolling factors, such as strip strength, roll grades, rolling temperature, rolling force, reduction and contact length, were also studied.Tahir, Mohammed et al. | 2003

Metal forming - Experimental and Computational Modelling of Temperature Gradients during Hot Rolling - In industrial production of hot roplled strip, problems with cooled edges can occur. At low finish rolling temperatures, the microstructure of the material can be fully austenitic and the edges can display a partially transformed microstructure due to a temperature gradient over the strip width. In this project the microstructure evolution in the final pass during hot rolling with cooled edges is described in a pilot scale experiment. The transformation behaviour of the material is calculated by a semi-empirical transformation model with respect to the temperature gradient over the strip width.Bleck, Wolfgang et al. | 2003

Materials technology - Bake Hardening of Laser Welded Dual Phase Steel - The influence of bake hardening on the mechanical properties of laser welded dual phase steel was investigated. Laser welding caused a pronounced increase of the hardness. The dual phase steel exhibited a clear bake hardening effect in both the as-received and the laser-welded conditions. The bake hardening effect was more pronounced in the prestrained laser welded condition. A pronounced decrease of the ductility was observed for prestrained laser welded DP steel.Krizan, Daniel et al. | 2003

Materials technology - Correlation between Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of High C-Cr Cast Steel - The effect of carbide morphology and matrix structure on abrasion resistance of cast alloyed steel with 2.57% C, 16.2% Cr and 0.78% Mo was studied in the as-cast and various heat treated conditions. Austenitizing this steel at a temperature of 1050 (degree)C led to the best combination of abrasion resistance and toughness in comparison with other heat treatment cycles.Ibrahim, Khaled M. et al. | 2003
