This report, Volume II, is the first of five volumes to be published to complete the report of 'Project Gasoline' research and development during the first five years of an Office of Coal Research contract with the Consolidation Coal Company. Part 1 reports the research on solvent extraction, extract filtration, and extract de-ashing. Part 2 reports the research on hydrocracking with supported catalyst. The primary objective of the work reported here was a demonstration of the continuous pre-pilot scale production of coal extract, using a recycled natural solvent derived from hydrogenation of the extract. The unit operations studied in this work include not only extraction but also associated operations if filtration and de-ashing of the filtered extract. The secondary objective of the work was a study of process variables in pilot plant design.
