Agriculture is closely connected to the environment. More and more intensive agricultural production has led to production methods which inverted this traditionally positive connection between agriculture and environment in some particular aspects. Specific problems occur in connection with water and air pollution, soil erosion and the loss of species. To make only the farmers responsible for it will not lead to a solution of the problem 'agriculture and environment'. It is necessary to take into consideration not only the agro-political conditions but also the economic and social aspects. The main aim must be an agro-political conception which enables agriculture to be resource-efficient, ecologically sustainable as well as profitable.
