The Department of Energy (DOE) Work for Others (WFO) Program has been a successful means of providing highly specialized scientific and technical services and products to non-DOE entities. Through its Management and Operating (M&O) contractors, DOE provides opportunities for solving critical and challenging advanced research and technology problems to other Federal agencies, State and local governments and private industry, which otherwise would be unattainable in the private sector. DOE also benefits by enhancing its technological base and capabilities and providing for the possibility of applying advances to DOE work. These activities result in increasing research and development interactions between DOE facilities and industry to facilitate transfer of technology for further development or commercialization. The WFO Annual Report provides a characterization of this work using selected examples of projects, financial information and identification of DOE management improvement efforts undertaken to strengthen management and oversight of WFO.
