This study compared the relative effectiveness of a self-paced learning module on Administration of Blood Transfusion with an instructor-presented lecture session. The two teaching approaches were offered to all registered nurses needing to meet the annual blood transfusion review requirement. A third group did not participate in either learning option, but took the same posttest. Results showed that nurses in the self-paced learning module group scored higher than those in the lecture group. Those taking only the test scored significantly lower than those who had had instruction. Passing scores on the posttest were achieved by 100 percent of the Module Group, 87 percent of the Lecture Group, and 48 percent of the Posttest-Only Group. If given a choice of teaching methods, approximately 50 percent of the study subjects preferred a module format.
