The purpose of the research was to determine the best size and position of a control crank to move a target follower on a two dimensional display. Best tracking performance was obtained when the radius of controls was two to three inches. Using targets moving in a horizontal plane it was found that the best performance was obtained when the right-left control was located in front and the toward-away control was located on the right side perpendicular to the first control. In designing controls for which the torque is minimal it is recommended that wheels having a radius of two or three inches be used. Cranks should be positioned so that the plane of movement of the control crank is parallel to the line of movement resulting from rotation of the cranks. (Author)
