Research was undertaken to: (1) Determine the general state-of-the-art of safety education efforts by consumer product manufacturers; (2) Assess the effectiveness of the various approaches in the prevention of product-related accidents; (3) Examine the costs of the various techniques; (4) Provide a critical evaluation of industry's efforts. The ultimate goal of this work was to provide insights into the ways in which a consumer can be directed to use his products more safely, thereby reducing the incidence of product-related accidents. The categories examined in detail were: (1) Power lawn mowers (man outdoors); (2) Electric portable circular and sabre saws (man indoors); (3) Electric kitchen blenders (woman indoors); (4) Plug-in electric (110 volt) toys (advising parent in safe use of product by his offspring).
