Seven hundred eighteen engineers laid off from NASA aerospace contracts between June of 1968 and October of 1970 responded to a survey in the spring and summer of 197l. The factors most significantly related to reemployment were age, months since layoff, degree level, and geographic area of layoff. Engineers older than 54 had an unemployment rate of 45 percent while engineers 25 to 34 had an unemployment rate of 19 percent. Engineers with a Masters Degree had an unemployment rate of 21 percent while engineers without a Bachelors Degree had an unemployment rate of 33 percent. Engineers laid off in California had an unemployment rate 4 percent higher than engineers laid off in the Southeastern U. S. and 13 percent higher than engineers laid off elsewhere in the U. S. Twenty-seven and one-half percent of the engineers were unemployed as of the spring of 1971. Of those engineers who were reemployed, only 53 percent were reemployed as engineers. Seventy-three percent of those reemployed were not reemployed in the Aerospace Industry. (Author)
