A user of the single processor CRAY X-MP at Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc., has the capability of running simultaneously several programs that are working on the same problem and can communicate by passing information back and forth during execution. Each program may be responsible for initializing additional programs. This message-passing method has been applied to the numerical simulation of physical systems, specifically, heat transfer phenomena. It allows the user to easily expand modeling capability of existing programs without the development of new simulation software. Each program is responsible for simulation of one part of the physical problem. The problem may be apportioned in any manner, for example, based on geometry or physical phenomena. 2 refs., 8 figs.
