The Conference for Statistics for Service Industries was convened in order to define broad areas of research and other activities that could be undertaken to improve existing data on service industries. Conference participants agreed that improvement is necessary given the gaps in the available information and the importance of services to the U.S. economy. Two important steps that could achieve this are expanding the industry detail in the Standard Industrial Classification system and expanding the scope of the economic censuses. The volume includes papers on (1) a general overview of the field, (2) the service sector of the future, (3) productivity in the service sector, (4) data collection, and (5) the IRS as a source of service industry data.
