RIPS-Net is the fiber optics local area network used in the Research Information Processing System (RIPS) which assists Research and Development activities for approximately 3000 researchers in the Tsukuba Research Center of AIST (Agency of Industrial Science and Technology) at the Tsukuba Science New City in Japan. RIPS-Net, was installed at the end of 1980 and began operation in January, 1981. After about one year of operational experience, we have confirmed the effectiveness of fiber optics applied to local area networks. This paper discusses some ideas for designing a large scale computer network, the RIPS-Net. A detailed configuration of the multipurpose data highway and some technical points are described. A description of some operational experiences is also presented.
