A high speed PLL IC, composed of ECL gates and operational at up to a 30 M bits/sec data transfer rate, has been developed for magnetic disk drives. The IC contains two phase-comparators and a VCO. It can separate data written not only in MFM but also in RLL codes. The IC was designed and fabricated, utilizing an advanced nitride self-aligned process. The IC, including 110 ECL gates and a total of 1200 elements on a 2.88 mm x 2.68 mm chip, was encapsulated into a 24 pin DIP plastic package. The IC was tested by mounting on practical magnetic disk drives, operating at the highest transfer rate of 20 M bits/sec, and its performances were verified. The phase drift for the PLL, in the temperature range from 0 to 70 Cel, was smaller than 1 ns. Jitter was also smaller than 1 ns. The IC can be applied to future magnetic disk drives which have high data transfer rates due to the increased recording density. Furthermore, the IC is applicable not only to disk drives, but also to optical discs, communication circuits, wide band VTRs and other devices which require high speed PLLs.
