Basic performance of a precipitator using a packed ferroelectric pellet layer for dust collection has been evaluated. An intense electric field can be formed around each ferroelectric pellet by polarization when a DC high voltage is applied to the pellet layer. Total surface area per unit volume of the pellet layer can be increased significantly using small sized pellets. Dust particles to be removed are precharged by a corona discharge in front of the pellet layer. The dust particles can be collected effectively onto the pellet surface by the intense electric field as well as the increased collection area. It should be noted that, when an AC high voltage is applied across the layer to form surface discharge, living cells collected on the pellet surface can be destroyed by the discharge and by ozone generated by the discharge. In order to study a possiblity to apply this precipitator to Diesel dust control and to bio-clean system, its basic collection performance test was conducted.
