Some of the important parameters that are implicated in designing light binoculars for passive night vision are described. From their influence on over-all performance the characteristics required of each of the sub-units which constitute the binoculars-intensifier tube, power supply, lens, eyepiece-are deduced. Thereupon the different choices and compromises, that may prove necessary when designing such equipments, become apparent. The particular case of night-driving goggles for vehicles is then set out, while recalling the requirements of users. Examination of the design of the OB41 binoculars developed at TRT provides an illustration. On this occasion the characteristics of each sub-unit are given as well as the overall performances obtained. Other choices are possible (notably the tube), and some examples illustrated by three other binoculars developed elsewhere in the world are given.
