A brief survey is given of data protection in various parts of the world up to about 1976. Stricter data protection has followed by the introduction of national laws in seven European countries, in recent years, i.e. Sweden (1973), West Germany (1977), France, Norway, Denmark, Austria (1978), Luxembourg, (1979). Legislation is pending in Belgium, Holland and Switzerland. Limited protection is provided in Portugal (1976) and Spain (1978). Details are given of the interpretation of specific words in various countries, 'data-object', 'data-subject', 'registered person'. International data transfer is much more frequent than ever previously possible and this has created problems where laws in adjoining countries do not correspond, leading to 'data-havens' and 'data-ghettos'. Some notes are given on international legislation under consideration in the EEC countries mainly on data file protection. Other international laws have been defined on data transfer by the DESO group (Australia, Canada, Japan, USA, New Zealand).
