Discusses the need for standards and describes the recently ratified CCITT X.400 Series Recommendations for message handling systems (MHS). The author also describes the interrelationship and emphasis of the various international standards organizations (e.g. CCITT, ISO, ECMA, and CEPT) actively participating in the formulation of these messaging standards. Particular attention is given to activities related to implementation profiles. Electronic mail and other forms of text interchange are becoming increasingly important in a large number of business sectors. The major influencing factor has been the widespread use of computer based office systems and workstations. However, the development of messaging and electronic mail for widespread use in a distributed form across all communities of interest has been hampered by the lack of suitable standards.
