Media for voice-data integration are considered. After some general historical perspectives on voice-data integration, a review of the important transmission parameters for selecting media is presented along with a discussion of various cable designs, including hybrid constructions. A systems example is given to illustrate the features of voice-data integration. One particular method which uses different types of media to transmit the different signals is highlighted. This low-risk approach allows early introduction of new office communication facilities, while avoiding the trap of early obsolescence, which is often associated with new systems offered at a time of rapidly changing technology. By combining the various media into special cables, this approach offers considerable savings in material, as well as installation costs.
