The paper describes the CAD/CAM development of extrusion dies with various wall contours as well as the experimental investigation of extruding lead billets through such dies. A generalized computer numerical control program has been written to generate dies with cosine, elliptical, hyperbolic, convex and conic walls. Commmercially pure lead billets of 2 inch (50.80 mm) diameter were extruded with 80 percent area reduction through each of these five dies. The split billets had an initially square grid pattern on their plane surfaces. The grid distortions during direct extrusion through these various die contours have been recorded. Load variations due to changes in die contour are presented for dry and lubricated billet extrusion.
