In gear cutting machines, there are many interdependent or constrained kinematic chains. The pitch accuracy and total composite error of a cut gear will depend upon the kinematic accuracy of the various kinematic chains in the given gear cutting machine. In the present work, a gear hobbing machine was analysed for its kinematic inaccuracy. The calculations were performed by, A) simple summation method, B) Statistical method. The components of kinematic inaccuracy, viz., backlash and transmission error were calculated for the individual gears and meshes of the kinematic chain of the machine under study. The kinematic inaccuracy of the machine was measured with a rotary vibration analyser and necessary data processing and recording equipment. The data will be useful in the design and production of gear cutting machines in particular and machine tools in general. (DePo)
