The effect of temperature on the mechanical properties and formability of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets were studied and their forming limit diagrams were obtained at temperatures between RT and 573K. Experimental results were compared to those of A 1100-O. Due to their strong plastic anisotropy, the rolled sheets of AZ31 showed poor formability at room temperature. They exhibit significantly low forming limits in deformation accompanied with reduction in thickness, that is, deformation in plane strain tension and biaxial tension. However, their formability was remarkably improved at elevated temperatures around 473K. In practice, warm forming at temperatures above 423K is recommended for magnesium sheets to observe acceptable formability.
