The impact strength of toughened PVC shows a drastic improvement with the addition of an amount of poly(n-butyl acrylate/methylmethacrylate/poly(methylmethacrylate/n-butylacrylate (poly(BA-MMA)/(MMA/BA)) core-shell structured particles. When the adddition amount of the core-shell particles is 15 phr, the impact strength becomes almost 5-times higher than that of the untoughened PVC. The yiedling stress, yielding strain and elastic modulus for the toughened PVC blend are all decreased to some extent as the amount of core-shell toughening modifiers exceeds the optimum value. SEM shows that the fracture surface of pure PVC is smooth and neat, and displays the typical features of brittle fracture. While for the toughened PVC, there is a wide range of stress stripes and cavity structures in SEM microgaphs, which are the traits of a typical 'toughned' fracture.
