The Brazilian textiles sector counts over 30,000 enterprises and turned over 25 billion US dollars in 2004, with USD 2.13 billion exports. That same year, the sector generated a surplus of 656 billion US dollars, and created over 66000 new jobs in the country. In 2005, the textile sector grew by 1 % in 2004. The number of garments manufactured increased by 2.5 %, and household linen articles by 5.9 %. The total volume of manufactured articles increased by 3.5 %. In total, 7.2 billion items were manufactured. Established 1960, the 'Textile and Apparel Industry Association (ABIT) now represents about 30000 enterprises front the textile sector, which employs over 1.6 million people in Brazil. With its 183 million consumers, Brazil is one of the largest markets in the world and its immediate aim is to represent 1 % of the global textile market, which will entail increasing the volume of its exports by 4 billion USD per year up to 2008. With revenues of 26.5 billion US dollars in 2005, the Brazilian textile and apparel industry is currently the sixth hugest textile manufacturer in the world, and the second largest producer of denim products. In addition, it manufactures 7.2 billion articles each year. With a total cotton production of over 1.3 million tons, Brazil is easily self-sufficient. The Brazilian textile sector has already invested 10 billion US dollars in its industrial tool, and an additional 8 billion will be invested by 2010 in order to finance all the upgrading and enhancements necessary. Of all textile products exported, 33 % are completed made-up products, with high added value, thereby generating more income than exports of raw materials. The Brazilian sea-wear sector has grown very strongly on the international market with exports posting a spectacular growth of 80 % between 2003 all 2004. Moreover, Brazilian production in this segment increased by 3.3 % between 2004 and 2005. The lingerie sector is also very active and has fared very well an International markets with exports growing by 19.5 % during 2004. In 2005, clothing represented 48 % of all finished products.
