The three step fermentation system of the 3A-biogas process was set up by two prototypes, one in Weibern (Austria) operating two reactors, another one in Leon (Spain) running one reactor with a reactor volume of about 25 m3. The 3A-biogas process is a one stage batch system with installed percolation system. It combines pretreatment, biogas production, and sanitation in three phases: 1. aerobic, 2. anaerobic, 3. aerobic. HACCP (hazard analysis and critical control point) was used as bases for the design of the process. Especially the requirements for the final product (compost) give limitations of microorganisms, weed seeds and levels of pollutants. First performance tests of three substrates show a sufficient operation of the prototypes and the further need of optimisation concerning the biogas yield. Organic fraction of MSW (municipal solid waste) with structure material, solid state chicken manure with maize silage and bovine manure with straw and wood chips were treated.
