Overhead presentation. The increasing threat of oil-shortages and rising oil prices, the impact on the environment and greenhouse gas emissions, and the resulting climate change are all elements that contribute to the concern for the future of our oil based economy. Both in the areas of energy resources as raw materials, alternatives are being sought. Europe has set a new goal: the development of composites based on (nearly) 100 % renewable products. The aim of the Nature Wins project is to develop fully bio-based thermoplastic composites. To achieve this goal, the thermoplastic polymer polylactic acid (PLA) was chosen as matrix material and hemp or flax as reinforcing fiber. All these materials are fully bio-based and biodegradable. For a composite quality that can compete with the currently available (partly) oil-based composites, an intimate blending and good interaction of the matrix and reinforcing fibers is crucial. Therefore PLA and hemp or flax fibers are blended in nonwovens and hybrid yarns. From the hybrid yarns UD-fabrics are produced. Finally, fabrics are consolidated and their mechanical properties and 3D-thermoforming possibilities are evaluated.
