Danieli Centro Combustion recently installed and commissioned a new pipe pre-heating furnace at the Vallourec do Brasil Belo Horizonte plant. This furnace, part of a complete revamping of the heat treatment line, uses waste gas from the downstream hardening furnace to preheat pipes to a maximum temperature of 450 °C. Outlet fumes then enter a centralized recuperator which is used to preheat hardening furnace burner air. This configuration allows to discharge the waste gases into the atmosphere at a temperature below 200 °C, consequently reducing natural gas consumption. This paper starts by offering a general overview of the revamping project including technical features of this furnace and describes the decision making process used to identify the best configuration in terms of energy recovery, process and product quality also giving a brief outlook on achieved and expected results. The project showed that continued cooperation between Danieli Centro Combustion and Vallourec allowed the identification of the best revamping solutions in terms of energy and quality. Efforts made during the engineering phase paid off allowing rapid commissioning and accomplishment of key results with great satisfaction on both sides. CFD analysis assisted in avoiding quality related problems and corrective modifications during the start-up phase. Outstanding consumption performances of the revamped line not only allowed substantial savings for the Client and a reduction in CO2 emissions but also made possible the reutilization of much of the existing equipment (combustion air fans, ejectors, etc) further limiting the project's carbon footprint. All these considerations show that continuous investments in research and innovative engineering solutions are mandatory to contend with the challenge of high competition in the market.
