The University of Southern Colorado has recently introduced a Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuit design program into its undergraduate curriculum in Electronics Engineering Technology. This program makes extensive use of a comprehensive set of CAD tools provided, in part, by grants from the National Science Foundation and United Technologies Microelectronics Center. The program has focused on using these tools to teach computer architecture and design. Examples of the various CAD tools used were given at the 1990 ASEE Annual Conference. This paper describes a design procedure which will eventually be incorporated into normal classroom and oaboratory instruction. This procedure is being used in a pilot project, the design of a Microcode CPU. The Microcode CPU is an 8 bit machine with 63 machine instructions and 16 microinstructions. The project was started in the spring semester 1990. The discussion in this paper emphasizes the design methodology employed, as opposed to details of circuit operation.
