Basically, radar receivers are designed to respond to certain types of desired electromagnetic signals within a predetermined frequency band(s). However, these receivers also respond to undesired signals having various modulation and frequency characteristics resulting in major electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem. Thus, it is necessary to treat a radar receiver as potentially susceptible to number of interference effects present in the operational environment of a radar system. In the present paper the main EMI problems that can exist in case of a radar receiver are analysed. A detailed experimental study is carried out in a typical L-band radar receiver to make it electromagnetic compatible (EMC). The applicability of certain EMI specifications given in MIL-STD 461C and MIL-STD 469 for subsystem level and system level are critically analysed.
