The stable supply of electricity is an increasing social need in industrialized countries. If facilities are damaged by an earthquake, the supply of power is stopped for a considerable period of time, and, it will have a disastrous influence over the social activities in the area. Within the power supply network, substations are the most vulnerable components to earthquakes, because of the architecture of high voltage switchgears and the mechanical reactions at the connections. So, the equipment in a substation which is susceptible to earthquakes must have sufficient strength against the earthquakes. Seismic design of substation equipment is being established in many countries based on the recent advance in seismic engineering. Here, the authors review the seismic resistance of existing equipment and to discuss the means to improve their reliability. The simplest method to evaluate the seismic resistance of existing substation equipment is given. Practical means to improve the resistance have also been discussed.
