Error compensation techniques have been widely applied to improve the accuracy capabilities of a machine tool or coordinate measuring machine (CMM). However, due to the lack of a proper error detection system, all the compensation methods for multi-axis machine tool geometric errors rely upon off-line measurement of each of the error components separately. The results of these measurements are static in nature, and can only reflect the conditions at the moment of measurement. These results are not suitable under the real working conditions because of disturbances from load and thermal deformations. In this paper, an on-line measurement system for the simultaneous detection of multiple error components for each moving axis is presented. The system is capable of performing dynamic measurement and its results reflect the final overall error of a machine tool slide. It is not interested in how the contribution of different error sources is. Some test results of the system are given and discussed.
