The evolution of diesel engines towards performances which are higher and higher, both in average pressure and piston speed, obliges one to give special attention to the transitory speeds of these engines during sudden load changes. The consideration of the transitory speeds is essential in some applications such as electric generating sets, tug-boat drives and their importance may be quite considerable in terms of carbon fouling of the engine, thermal fatigue, service life. In the first part, the author analyses the factors which condition these transitory speeds and depend upon the engine characteristics themselves: excess air, calorific level, regulation, inertia of rotating masses. The influence of the driven unit conditioning the power required is duly explained in the second part, based on experimental reported results. A comparison between these results and a theoretical development has been drawn. In the third part, the author mentions a certain number of means which allow to reduce the time required for the recovery of the load. Finally, in the fourth part, the author examines the influence of the transitory speed on some functional problems relating to the engine: smoke production, fouling of the cylinder-heads, thermal fatigue.
