An improved microbial assay for the detection of chloramphenicol residues in shrimp tissues
Elsevier | 2007|Keywords: Seafood industries require a cost effective screening method with high sensitivity for the evaluation of chloramphenicol (CAP) residues in shrimps and fish. Chromatographic methods generally offer high sensitivity but require sophisticated instrumentation and skilled personnel. Therefore, this work was undertaken to develop a microbial assay for the detection of CAP residues. A sensitive bacterium was isolated and found to be useful in detection of CAP at ppb levels in shrimps on par with chromatographic methods. This assay shall help the shrimp farmers and seafood processors to test the presence of CAP residues in raw shrimps at a minimum cost. -
