Environmental Hazards of Sea-Dumped Chemical Weapons While World War I (WWI) is most associated with widespread use of chemical weapons before 1950, significant arsenals were stockpiled in Europe during WWII. Many of these in particular were dumped in the Baltic Sea, posing a significant environmental health and ecotoxicological hazard. With bone-chilling concentrations of arsenoids and the WWI-nom-de-guerre yperite (mustard gas) a multinational effort to gauge the risk of these deposits is ongoing. In this Feature, Sanderson et al. summarize the findings and indicate what more needs to be doneSanderson, H. / Fauser, P. / Thomsen, M. / Vanninen, P. / Soderstrom, M. / Savin, Y. / Khalikov, I. / Hirvonen, A. / Nliranen, S. / Missiaen, T. et al. | 2010

Getting to the bottom of arsenic standards and guidelines Arsenic (As) is a notorious metalloid that poses a significant health hazard in many regions. As a carcinogenic toxicant, its ``safe levels'' can often be legislated lower than the natural background. Since such levels are intimately tied to the ability to detect harmful forms of As in water or food-where the form(s) in question need ascertaining-choosing reasonably available analytical techniques complicate public health policies, especially in developing regions. In this Feature, Meharg and Raab review the international approaches to As and comment on how the protocols might better be craftedMeharg, A.A. / Raab, A. et al. | 2010
