The basic finite element formulations of upper and lower bound limit analysis are first reviewed with an emphasis on arriving at a unified formulation applicable to arbitrary yield criteria. A number of extensions are then reviewed: elastoplasticity (perfect and hardening), dynamics, and consolidation. In all cases, it is emphasized how these follow as direct extensions from limit analysis and may be treated using the same solution algorithms.
