The design, implementation and integration of distributed systems such as a railway signaling system (or rolling stock) requires the assessment of the electromagnetic compatibility of the whole system and the evaluation of the interference between the sub-systems and components. The successful delivery of such systems is usually achieved through a well structured system engineering process. To assure system level electromagnetic compatibility, it is important to fully understand the design requirements, the electromagnetic environment in which the system will be used, the system interfaces-and their ability to influence the system EMC, the system EMC requirement and documentation requirements to demonstrate system compliance as well as the safety functionality of the system (or sub-system). EMC system engineering is therefore required throughout the life cycle of the system. This paper deals with the principles of EMC assurance and management within a system engineering approach to system design. (8 pages)
