In response to the 'Priority Conceptual Objective' on Automated Fire Support established by Chief of Staff in June 1967, the US Army Advanced Materiel Concepts Agency (AMCA) convened an Ad Hoc Working Group on 17-21 November 1969 to consider the application of automation to fire support processes for the time frame 1990-year 2000. A generalized model of the fire support process was developed and a comparative evaluation made of current and conjectured fire support methods. Based on this evaluation, a conceptual design for an advanced fire support process was defined. The principal conclusions reached by the Ad Hoc Working Group are as follows: it is credible and practical to design, develop and deploy an automated fire support system that can operate in essentially real-time (less than one minute from target detection to first round fire-for-effect), and properly processed and displayed, the data available to the commander from the target acquisition subsystem would enable him to effectively manage the conduct of a combat operation in essentially real time.
