The report is a complete survey of the application of aerial photography to the analysis of vegetation in arid zones. Techniques for photographing, identifying, analyzing and interpreting vegetation at all photographic scales from 1:3,00 and larger to 1:50,000 and smaller are discussed. The technique which receives primary emphasis for the photographic interpretation of vegetation over wide areas is the selection of key sites, the preparation of aerial photographic interpretation standards and the extrapolation of these standards from the key sites over the entire area. Almost 400 different plants are mentioned by name, and there is an extensive bibliography. Areas discussed are primarily within the bounds of the Soviet Union, with some references to Africa and the Near East. (Author)
