The lung ventilators covered by this study have a wide range of application. They have come into use because of the need for a device that provides patient ventilation or augments inadequate spontaneous breathing and oxygenation. There are many varieties of lung ventilators; however, the basic criterion used in judging these ventilators is whether they are instrumental in providing or augmenting the ventilation of a patient. The characteristic which is of primary importance to the effectiveness of a ventilator is delivery of an adequate volume of gas under a variety of conditions without causing injury to the patient. The clinical use of lung ventilators has led to reports of difficulties in using these devices in a safe and efficacious manner. General and specific reported hazards are discussed in subsection sections of this report. The objective of this study is to accumulate and analyze background information pertaining to the safety and performance of lung ventilators. The project was undertaken in order to evaluate the current American National Standard for Breathing Machines for Medical Use (ANSI Z79.7-1976).
