A modified air sampler was tested on its suitability for a series of halogenated hydrocarbons and light hydrocarbons, with emphasis on stratospheric air sampling. This cryogenic air collection method was successfully used for the measurement of long-lived trace gases such as CH4, N2O, CFCl3, and CF2Cl2. The results provide representative vertical profiles of chlorinated hydrocarbons for medium latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. The number of simultaneously measured trace gases, and the good height resolution of the profiles allow the study of large-scale transport phenomena as well as the clarification of open questions related to stratospheric chemistry.
