A method for preparing titanium tetrachloride suitable for titanium metal or titanium dioxide pigment production therefrom from a perovskite starting material comprising the steps of reacting said perovskite starting material in particulate form with a chlorinating agent and a carbonaceous reducing agent in an oxygen free environment at a temperature in the range 136 C to 772 C and recovering the resulting titanium tetrachloride-containing fume. The perovskite starting material is selected from perovskite ore, perovskite concentrate and titanium-bearing sulfates, chlorides and oxides derived from the processing of perovskite and is desirably dried to at least remove free moisture prior to reacting it with the chlorinating agent.
