This thesis examines the containerization needs of the U. S. Naval precipitated by the recall of Army-owned military vans (MILVANS) currently supporting four Naval logistics pipelines in the Pacific. A brief history of containerzation is followed by a discussion of the types of containers in use, the international standards applied to them, and the advantages of the through concept of containerization. The development of military-owned standard containers and containerized cargo movement within the military are then discussed. After the evolution and definition of the problem are presented, viable alternatives for replacing lost MILVAN assets are analyzed. In the process, a framework for analysis is developed that can be further effectively employed by decision makers as desired. In the final chapter, specific conclusions and recommendations are presented regarding the alternatives evaluated. (Author)
