For decades drones have been used for military or governmental purposes which has created a stigma among the U.S. population and interest groups as a system that could jeopardize citizens constitutional rights of privacy. This paper identifies that that stigma is outdated and with technological development, proven by commercial and recreational users, drones have been identified as a critical asset for disaster responders. Through the work of regulators, non-governmental organizations, and the commercial enterprises, there are processes for certification, codes of conduct, and best practices to effectively use drones. Drones are one of the most important pieces of equipment that can be deployed in response to disasters in the United States.
