This study of democratic culture in Costa Rica is part of a comparative study carried out in eight Latin American countries: Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia. The research not only attempts to compare the political culture in these countries, but also create a useful tool for monitoring the changes that these countries undergo over time. The Costa Rican study is based on the results of a nationwide survey on values, attitudes, and opinions that was carried out in March 2004, by interviewing 1,500 persons. The questionnaire used has a common core that was shared with all the countries included in the study, as well as specific topics developed for use in Costa Rica.
