XCOR is an expert system/intelligent assistant to aid human analysts in detecting and correcting errors in oceanographic data collected from research and merchant voluntary observing ships throughout the world. As an assistant, XCOR can query the analyst for the analyst's opinion on patterns or only on the difficult-to-classify patterns. To assist the analyst XCOR can interrogate its database for past, relevant, validated patterns. XCOR can permit the analyst to query about the rationale for previous classifications. To display this information XCOR provides a graphical, multi-window interface into the database. Each window provides a different view of the data while in the different stages of validation. When operated in an automatic mode XCOR behaves much more like a classical expert system but does not have facilities for user-system dialogues. It simply accepts unprocessed data, performs the corrections it can, and indicates errors found but not corrected.
