The author discusses how the introduction of electronic tubes opened up new opportunities for both audio and radio frequency signal amplification. As a result, the quality of the existing telecommunications provisions could be improved considerably within a short time, and new types of telecommunication originated. Telephone circuits could be installed covering distances of over 1000 km. In the second part of the article the author describes the spectacular developments which took place in the field of radio communication. Owing to the dawning awareness of the existence of the ionosphere and the availability of suitable electronic tubes the performance reliability of the long-distance radio telegraph circuits could be increased. In the last part of the article the readers' attention is focused on the introduction of radio broadcasting in the Netherlands and the establishment of a direct radio telephone circuit with Bandung.
