A computerized method for welding visual inspection is proposed by the authors. The method is based on computer image processing of an X-ray photograph of the weld, in which information concerning the weldments, such as shape of weld bead, is contained. Structural patterns are extracted and seven measurements are calculated using those patterns. The software system for visual inspection is constructed based on these seven measurements. From the experimental result, it is shown that this system can provide a performance of more than 0.85 correlation to human visual inspection and therefore is a promising tool to realize objectivity and quantitativity of welding inspection. In addition, the consistency of the system and the possibility of reducing computing costs are discussed.
